COVID School

Anyone else super conflicted about school this year? I feel very nervous when I send Liz off to school. I would feel horrible if she brought home the virus and then gave it to one or more of her grandparents.

Although Liz earned the Outstanding Remote Learner award in her Kindergarten class last spring, remote learning was not easy for or on us. There were so many fights between her and I. Over turned desks and chairs, thrown writing implements, and slammed doors. I know she was mourning the loss of school and seeing her friends. She was angry with the world. We all were!

Because of our struggles in the spring my husband and I knew she had to go back to class to get some social interaction. We were thrilled that our school district decided go back in a hybrid style. Liz started off with going 2 days a week. It was working out great. We had good experiences on our remote days and I loved knowing what was going on and what she was learning in school.

Then for reasons I can only speculate on the school district decided to send the elementary students back 4 days a week with 1 remote day on Friday. She is very happy going to school each day seeing and playing with friends. But I hold back tears and say a prayer each day that she will be safe and healthy. I cannot bear the thought of taking her out of school to do home or online school.

Liz was doing so well with reading when schools closed in March, but the summer slide hit hard. I tried to keep her up on her reading during the summer, but I stopped pushing her and she lost the will to keep reading. Its starting to get better. She is regaining her confidence slowly, but still gets frustrated with difficult words and runs off or refuses to keep going.

I know I am not the only one struggling with or worrying about their child's education at this difficult time. So I want to hear about your struggles, frustrations, and concerns. Maybe we can help each other out. Put your kids age and grade in the comments and maybe someone else has found something that works for them that may also work for you.
