The Day the Backup Fails
It was a heck of a morning! Started with Lizzie being mad at me for putting the toothpaste on the wrong toothbrush. Many things went wrong, but the worst of it was when I realized hundreds of photos from 2013 where missing from my hard drive. About 10 months of our personal history just gone. Poof!
I checked both of my external hard drives. The backup on my first one hadn't been updated since 2012. Oops! And the same photos were missing from the second one. Dang it! It makes me sick to my stomach to think of the photos that are missing. It also makes me wonder how the heck it happened. I thought I had it all backing up! I just can't believe it happened.
I have found some photos from phones in our google and amazon photos, but anything from my DSLR is missing right now. I have recovery software running. We will see if anything comes of it, but I am trying not to get my hopes up too much. At this point it is just a waiting game. The recovery software has an estimated 7 hours remaining and it is killing me to wait. I will also be checking my old computer. My guess is that the switch a couple of years ago is where it all went wrong.
Remember the 3-2-1 back up rule. THREE copies of your data, a working copy and two backup copies. Back up copies stored on TWO types of storage media like external drives, network drives, or cloud storage. Finally, store ONE of your copies offsite with a neighbor, in a safety deposit box, or online.
So consider this your reminder. Backup your photos! Today! You won't regret running your backup today, but you may regret not running it. Trust me!
