Rootstech 2020

Rootstech was such an amazing experience!

Rootstech is a conference put on by FamilySearch Interenational, the family history arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It started 10 short years ago and has grown so much. It is now the world's largest Family History conference. Rootstech has classes for Family History newbies up to the most advanced family historians. Presenters come from different departments of The Church, prominent companies in the industry, as well as influencers from across the world.

I was able to volunteer as well as attend classes at the conference. During my volunteer shifts I was in classrooms helping the teacher set up, counting class attendees and helping them find seats when the room started getting full.

The rest of the conference I was taking advantage of all the amazing classes. I learned about the Missionary and Pioneer Databases on the Church History Library website. I also learned about using the Joesph Smith Papers catalog! One of the best classes I took was Scandinavian research. It gave me ideas for how to read records in other languages.

During the conference the 'Relatives Around Me' function in the Family Tree app gets taken over by 'Relatives at Rootstech.' I met up with a few distant cousins. From left to right: Donna-2nd cousin once removed, Stacy-3rd cousin, Preston-2nd cousin.

Stacy is someone I have followed in the scrapbook industry for a long time. She founded Simple Scrapbooks magazine and co-founded big picture classes. I have listened to her on podcasts, read her blog, and followed her on social media. I took her class at Rootstech and introduced myself then. Later that day I noticed her in my Relatives at Rootstech as my 3rd cousin. We met up again and talked about Henrick Christian Jensen, her great grandpa and my step great grandpa. It was so cool!

I can't believe how invigorated I felt when the conference was over! I'm also incredibly sad it was over. I hope i have the opportunity to volunteer and attend again. Until next time Rootstech!
